Choosing a puppy is exciting, and it is tempting to pick the one that looks at you first. A little planning leads to a better match. Here is how we suggest families approach it when they come to Kanine Country Club in Sperry, Iowa.
Start with your own household
Before you think about the puppy, think about your home. Who is home during the day? Are there young children or other pets? Do you have a fenced yard? Your answers shape which puppy will thrive with you. The questions on our puppy application are there to help with exactly this.
Think about energy level
Within a litter, some puppies are bold and busy while others are calmer and more watchful. Neither is better. A very active family may love a bold puppy, while a quieter home may prefer a mellow one. Tell us about your daily routine and ask what we see in each puppy.
Watch how they behave
Spend a few minutes watching the puppies play and rest. Notice who comes over to say hello, who is happy to explore and who takes a moment to warm up. A puppy is not a finished personality, but early behavior gives useful clues.
Ask about how they were raised
Where a puppy spends its first weeks matters. Ours spend time outdoors in the grass and indoors with people, so they get used to real life early. Ask any breeder how their puppies are raised and what they are exposed to.
Be clear about your preferences
If you have a preference for male or female, or for a color, say so up front. We will do our best to match it with what is available, and we will be honest if the timing is not right.
Do not rush
The right puppy is worth waiting for. If nothing in the current litter feels right, you can join the list for upcoming litters. Call 319-759-4210 to ask what is available, and see our FAQ for more answers.
