Bringing a puppy home is a big day. A little preparation makes the first weeks calmer for you and your new dog. This checklist comes from our experience raising Labrador and Golden Retriever puppies at Kanine Country Club in Sperry, Iowa.
Puppy-proof every room
Puppies explore with their mouths. Pick up shoes, cords, remotes, small toys and anything else that could be chewed or swallowed. Move houseplants out of reach, since some are harmful to dogs, and secure trash cans and cabinets.
Set up a safe space
Choose a quiet spot for a crate or bed where your puppy can rest. A comfortable, predictable place helps a puppy settle, especially in the first nights. Add a blanket and a safe chew toy.
Gather the basics
You will want a collar and leash, food and water bowls, a bed or crate, chew toys, and the food your puppy has been eating. Keeping the same food at first helps prevent an upset stomach. Ask us what your puppy is eating before pickup day.
Check your yard and fence
Walk the yard and look for gaps in the fence, open gates or hazards. Puppies are quick and curious, and a secure outdoor space gives them room to play safely.
Plan your routine
Decide who will feed, walk and take the puppy out, and when. Young puppies need frequent potty breaks, and a steady schedule helps with training. Plan some time at home during the first few days if you can.
Find a veterinarian
Choose a vet before your puppy arrives and schedule a first visit. Bring any records you receive and ask about vaccinations and care going forward.
